The Energy Transition Act (SB 489) has been approved by lawmakers in New Mexico as well as committing the state to transition to 80 percent renewable power by 2040, SB 489 will allow money to be allocated toward diversifying the economy that will be strongly affected by closing the San Juan Generating Station.

The Republican Party of New Mexico had opposed the passing of the act and encouraged people via Facebook to nominate two republican judges to the New Mexico Supreme Court in an effort to quell issues like this in the future.

"There are two vacancies on the Supreme Court and two on the Court of Appeals this fall, and we need Republicans in there," they said in their post. "We need conservative judges on our New Mexico benches."

Six Republicans helped to make the passage a bipartisan effort, but many others hoped to make amendments to the bill that would allow for more time before it was passed.
