A car being driven at a high rate of speed on the wrong side of the road struck another car in north Roswell early Sunday morning (Sept. 18), resulting in the deaths of everyone – three people – inside the cars. The crash, which occurred around 2:25 a.m. in the northbound lanes of North Main Street at the intersection with Linda Vista Boulevard, left both cars on fire.
The Roswell Police Department investigation, which utilized witness statements and video surveillance footage among other things, has determined a Dodge Challenger was traveling at an excessive speed south in the northbound lanes of Main Street. A Lexus that had been traveling south in the proper southbound lanes turned left to head east on Linda Vista. The Lexus was struck by the Dodge, coming from the wrong and unexpected direction, as the Lexus crossed the northbound lanes while making its turn onto Linda Vista.
The impact of the crash sent the Lexus into the base of a tree a short distance off the street near the intersection. Following the crash, the Dodge came to a stop some distance farther south on Main Street. Both cars suffered extensive damage from the crash and resulting fires, which were quickly extinguished by the Roswell Fire Department when it arrived minutes after the crash.
The man driving the Dodge was identified as Felipe Villa Espinoza, 27. The man driving the Lexus was identified as David Jonathan Avina, 32. A woman who was the passenger in the Lexus was identified as Tyler D. Armstrong, 29. She was ejected from the car during the crash. All three of the deceased are from Roswell. All three died at the scene of the crash.
The investigation of this incident remains ongoing in order to determine additional aspects and factors of the crash.
