Today, Zia Elementary School in Clovis, NM was recognized by U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona as one of 356 schools nationwide to be named a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School.

This recognition is awarded to schools that excel in academic performance or make significant strides in closing achievement gaps among different student groups.

“The National Blue Ribbon Schools Award is a testament to the exceptional achievements of students and educators at each of these schools,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona.

“The 2024 National Blue Ribbon Schools are raising the bar for our nation’s students, serving as models for effective teaching and intentional collaboration in their schools and communities. As we celebrate their achievements, let us look to these schools for inspiration as we champion education as the foundation of a brighter future for every child.”

Under the leadership of Dr. Kaylene Davis, Zia Elementary School serves students from kindergarten through fifth grade in north-east Clovis.

Clovis Municipal Schools has a history of Blue Ribbon Schools. Mesa Elementary School was named a Blue Ribbon School in 2016 and 2001, and the former Ranchvale Elementary School received the award in 2010.

National Blue Ribbon Schools share common traits such as clear visions of instructional excellence upheld by leaders, effective teaching methods, robust professional development for staff, data-driven instruction, and collaboration among families, communities, and educators.

A National Blue Ribbon School award flag displayed at a school is an emblem of exceptional teaching and learning. These schools serve as models for effective and innovative practices across the nation.

Each nominated school submits an application detailing its culture, programs, assessments, instructional practices, professional development efforts, leadership approach, family involvement, and community engagement.
