The Lea County Sheriff's Office wants to warn people about phone scams, where callers pose as current law enforcement personnel from our office. These impersonators inform you that you missed jury duty, and the issue can be cleared by paying fines. THIS IS A SCAM! Do not send callers any money or give them personal information. The Lea County Sheriff’s Office will never call and ask for money to clear warrants, civil matters, or any other fine. The easiest way to avoid falling victim to a scam is not to answer calls if you don’t recognize the incoming number. If you ever have any questions, please call us at 575-396-3611.
As a reminder, if you receive an unsolicited call claiming to be from your local law enforcement, here are some tips to help you prevent a SCAM:
Law Enforcement will NOT call you requiring payment for fines or fees
Government agencies (IRS, Social Security, Medicare) will NOT call you to verify your accounts
Amazon will NOT call you or text you to verify purchases on your account
If they are aggressive and put an unrealistic time limit on you to pay. HANG UP!
