Lea County Sheriff’s Investigators Charge, Arrest Homicide Suspect

Homicide

Lea County Sheriff's Office issued the following announcement on March 23.

On January 3, 2022, at approximately 7:30 AM, Lea County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the intersection of Reed Road and Hillburn Road in Lovington, New Mexico, about an unresponsive male subject who was seen lying on the west side of Reed Road. He was identified as Jeremy Holliman, age 41, of Hobbs, New Mexico. The office of the Medical Investigator determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound to the chest. Through further investigative efforts and witness interviews, Investigators determined Zachary R. Gonzales, age 26, of Hobbs, New Mexico, shot Holliman in the chest. Gonzales intended to rob Holliman of his backpack, which was believed to have had illicit drugs and a large sum of money.

March 19, 2022, Lea County Sheriff’s Deputies located Gonzales driving northbound on Grimes near Kansas, where a traffic stop was attempted. Gonzales failed to stop and continued driving, ignoring stop signs. Gonzales later stopped his vehicle near the intersection of Knowles and Colorado, where he was taken into custody.

Zachary R. Gonzales was transported to the Lea County Detention Center where he was booked and charged with Murder in the First Degree (Felony Murder), Attempt to commit a Felony to wit Robbery (2nd Degree Felony), Conspiracy to wit Robbery (3rd Degree Felony), Firearms or destructive devices; receipt or possession by certain person (3rd Degree Felony), and Resisting, Evading and Obstructing an Officer (Misdemeanor).

Gonzales is currently being held at the Lea County Detention Center awaiting arraignment.
