Chaves County issued the following announcement on March 29.
A 19-year-old man was arrested early Sunday (March 27) and charged with murder in the Saturday morning (March 26) shooting death of his 17-year-old roommate at a west Roswell apartment complex.
Darin Penn is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Mason Mayes, a 17-year-old male. Roswell Police Department officers who were called around 7 a.m. Saturday to the apartment at Spring River Luxury Apartment Homes in the 1600 block of North Sycamore Avenue found Mayes lying on the balcony with a gunshot wound to his head. Mayes was transported to a hospital, but later died.
Officers located Penn hiding in a bedroom closet in the apartment. A rifle believed to have been used in the shooting was found inside the apartment. Investigators believe Penn, who called 911 after the shooting, may have been under the influence of a drug or other substance and was possibly delusional at the time of the shooting.
Penn (pictured) was detained and held at the police department while RPD’s Criminal Investigations Division conducted the investigation. Based on the investigation, an arrest warrant was approved by a judge late Saturday night and Penn was formally arrested Sunday shortly before 1 a.m. He was booked into the Chaves County Detention Center without bond pending his arraignment in court.
