CITY OF CARLSBAD, NM: Condolences to the family of Ofelia Bernal Estrada and Leopoldo Estrada Jr

Announcement

City of Carlsbad, NM issued the following announcement on Jan. 2.

We want to offer our condolences to the family of Ofelia Bernal Estrada and Leopoldo Estrada Jr., who both passed away in December. Ofelia and Leo were wonderful residents and great-great grandparents who were also very caring and generous people. So many members of their family have followed their lead and given back to this community, including their son, City Councilor Leo Estrada III. Services are being handled through West Funeral Home.

Hopefully, everyone did OK with the cold front which swept through Carlsbad earlier this week. Eddy County received a small amount of snowfall Wednesday morning. Thanks again to the Community of Hope Center (across the street from La Tienda), for opening Dec. 30 and 31 and Jan. 1 for those in need of a shelter and warm meal. Robert and Patricia Jacquez, with help from the United Way, have really made a difference in the lives of others. Thanks also to Carlsbad Transitional Housing and other groups who also help provide shelter when it is needed.

Thanks as well to local meteorologist Tony Pastorello for providing our community with weather updates. You can always call (575) 885-1848 for an update.

After a recent column about mental health, United Way Director Linda Dodd shared some other options for anyone having a mental health crisis. The United Way’s 211 line can give out mental health referrals, but for more urgent assistance, individuals are asked to text HOME to 741741 to chat with someone. Another option is the New Mexico Crisis and Access Line at 1-855-NMCRISIS. Please don’t hesitate to contact any of these numbers if you or a loved one is experiencing any kind of emotional crisis, mental health or substance abuse concern. In an emergency, please call 911 immediately.

We have been informed that local radio station KCCC has decided to close its doors. KCCC has been an integral part of this community for many decades. In addition to the music, Carlsbad residents swapped items on “Let’s Trade Even,” listened to Bob Scholl, Ernie White, Stella Davis and many others debate on “Community Forum” and enjoyed the excellent football broadcasts by Bill St. John and others.

Marion Jenkins first put KCCC on the air in 1963. His son Nick ran the station for many years and did an excellent job. We wish Nick and everyone at KCCC the very best in all their future projects.

Finally, thanks to Constructors Inc. for doing such a great job repaving Callaway Drive quickly. Due to the cold front coming in during the second half of the week, Constructors doubled up and got the job done.

Sincerely,

Carlsbad Mayor Dale Janway
