City of Roswell issued the following announcement on Apr. 2.
While the full slate of activities usually associated with the City of Roswell’s annual Arbor Day event will not be available this year, the Parks Department and Keep Roswell Beautiful have set up a way to get tree and shrub seedlings into the hands of local residents to plant in their yards or other properties.
The Arbor Day Drive-Thru Seedling Pick-Up is scheduled for April 11 from 9 to 11 a.m. at Cahoon Park. This is a free event that will offer two seedlings per vehicle. The Arbor Day event is usually held at Spring River Zoo, but Cahoon Park will host this year’s limited drive-thru event. Vehicles will be directed to enter and exit the line using specific park access points on North Union Avenue and West Fourth Street. People should look for signs and traffic-flow directors.
The trees and shrubs being offered are types that are well adapted to this area and usually do well in this region. The trees will include Arizona cypress, lacebark elm, bur oak and Arizona sycamore. The shrubs will include Apache plume, big sagebrush, desert mountain mahogany, lilac, Mormon tea and winterfat.
National Arbor Day is the last Friday of April each year, but each state celebrates it on a day of its choosing. In New Mexico, it is officially recognized on the second Friday in March. The Roswell event is annually scheduled to take place between the state and national dates for Arbor Day.
The local April 11 event contributes to the criteria qualifying Roswell to be a Tree City USA, a designation allotted by the national Arbor Day Foundation. Roswell’s 30 years as a Tree City USA makes it the New Mexico city to currently hold the designation for the longest continuous period.
