The New Mexico State Police announced it is investigating a shooting involving the Lea County Sheriff's Office that occurred in early January.
The shooting involved a sheriff's deputy who was attempting to conduct a traffic stop when the vehicle, a white four-door passenger car with a Texas license plate, pulled into an apartment complex and caused the deputy to lose sight of the vehicle for a short time, according to the press release.
The vehicle then struck the deputy's vehicle head-on and attempted to flee at a high rate of speed and the deputy discharged his weapon toward the vehicle, firing at least one shot, the press release reports.
The deputy was treated at the scene for non-life threatening injuries and the driver of the vehicle has still not been located or identified. The vehicle had been reported missing by the Hobbs Police Department.
