Clovis MLK Commission reveals student contest winners ahead of scholarship breakfast

The Clovis Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission has announced the winners of its annual Art, Essay, and Speech Contest. This year saw over 400 entries from students at Clovis Municipal Schools and Clovis Christian School.

Participants engaged in a speech contest on December 9, centered around the theme "Non-violence seeks to win friendship and understanding." Winners of the speech category will present their work at the upcoming 34th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Breakfast on January 18, 2025, at Clovis High School Cafeteria.

The breakfast event is a tradition in Clovis that celebrates student achievements while honoring Dr. King's legacy of peace and unity. Contest winners will receive medallions and first-place winners will be awarded cash prizes for their exceptional submissions.

The commission expressed gratitude to parents, teachers, and school administrators who supported students throughout the contest process. Their support enabled students to delve into Dr. King's legacy and consider the importance of non-violence in today's society.

Winners in various categories include:

**Art:**

- Kindergarten: Aria Padillia (1st place), Julia Wright (2nd place), Thea Cordell (3rd place) from Clovis Christian Schools.

- 1st - 2nd Grade: Camilla Franklin (1st place) from iAcademy at Lincoln Jackson; Daleyza Quintana (2nd place) from Parkview Elementary; Joanna Hoover (3rd place) from Clovis Christian Schools.

- Other grades featured winners such as Elizabeth Ann Guiterrez, Gloria Briseno, Maylon Crowder, Makenna Music & Alex Medina among others across different schools.

**Essay:**

- 1st - 2nd Grade: Lincoln Bolling (1st place) from Highland Elementary School; Beckett Wiegel (2nd place) from Zia Elementary School.

- Other notable essay winners include Mia Romero, Damion Munoz, Natalie Ellsworth, Anesa Maltos across various grades.

**Speech:**

- Kindergarten winner Symphony Smart hailed from Mesa Elementary.

- Damian Chavez took first in the 3rd - 5th grade category representing Arts Academy at Bella Vista.
