Roswell residents gathered Saturday at the Roswell Mall to honor those who lost their lives in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

Mayor Tim Jennings told the crowd he will always remember being with family when he saw the second tower hit. He added that first responders are owed our eternal gratitude and spoke of a 2002 shooting that claimed the life of Roswell Fire Chief Louis Jones.

“Freedom isn’t free,” Jennings said. “Someone gives for our rights to have that freedom. And too many give it all.”

Roswell Police Chief Philip Smith said he was a new lieutenant and remembered watching the news with his father, and said it showed that our country was battling an unconventional foe.

“We watched that second plane hit the tower,” Smith said. “It was surreal. My dad said the world will never be the same, and we have to agree with that.”
