Clovis Community College issued the following announcement on Dec. 17.
Clovis Community College has made the difficult decision to opt-out of the Spring 1 segment of the 2021 athletic season due to the statewide COVID-19 statistical trends and concerns over the college’s ability to adequately protect student-athletes and employees from the coronavirus.
This decision impacts men's and women's soccer and cross country programs. A decision will be made later in the spring about the Spring 2 sports (track and swim/dive).
All student-athletes will retain their year of eligibility regardless of their teams’ competition status during the 2020-2021 academic year and will continue to progress toward their degree requirements.
We are all committed to helping student-athletes stay active, connected, and on-track to meet their individual educational goals. This impacts approximately 80 student-athletes at Clovis Community College.
“Based on the current data and trends, Clovis Community College will opt-out of the Spring 1 segment athletics to help ensure the safety of our students, employees, and community. My heart hurts with this decision because I believe athletics plays a critical role in student access and student success. The athletic department, including our amazing student support team, will continue to support our student-athletes in our online environment and help them stay active, connected, and on- track to meet their individual educational goals,” said President Dr. Lori Bennett.
