Residents registered to vote might have to wait a little longer before they find out how they’ll be able to cast their ballots in the June 2 election.
Those for and against locals voting via mail are scheduled to plead their case in front of the New Mexico Supreme Court on April 14.
So far, 27 county clerks have petitioned the court to have voters mail in their ballots with hopes of flattening the curve of the COVID-19 spread, the Quay County Sun reported.
Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver is for mailing in ballots as well.
But many Republicans are against the mail-in ballot method, to the point that they’ve already taken legal action. They claimed in a news release that mailing in votes is just asking for “statewide fraud,” according to the Quay County Sun.
But County Clerk Ellen White pointed out that nearly all (90% to be exact) of polling locations are closed anyway because of the nationwide COVID-19 shutdown.
