A local teenager has been arrested and charged with multiple criminal counts in connection with the Sunday evening (July 10) shooting of a store manager who fought with the teen after seeing the teen in the process of shoplifting gun ammunition from the store.
The 16-year-old male is accused of using a handgun he had concealed in his pants to shoot the manager of the Big R store in the 1300 block of South Main Street as the two scuffled inside the store near the front doors around 6:10 p.m. The teen and another male juvenile, who had been in the store with the teen, then ran from the store and got into a vehicle that was driven away by another person.
The store manager, a 35-year-old man, suffered a single gunshot to the chest. He was transported to a local hospital and then flown to another hospital. On Monday (July 11), he was listed in stable condition awaiting further medical treatment.
Through the Roswell Police Department investigation, the teen accused of being the shooter was located at a house in the 900 block of Escalante Court in the north part of the city. The teen was among multiple people who ran from the house when officers approached the house around 2 a.m. Monday. He was quickly apprehended and a gun was found nearby. He remained in police custody as RPD’s Criminal Investigations Division worked to obtain an arrest warrant. He will be held in a juvenile detention facility in another county.
The teen is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon (resulting in great bodily harm), armed robbery, tampering with evidence, unlawful possession of a handgun by a person (state law sets the legal age to possess a handgun at 19), unlawful carrying of a deadly weapon (concealing it without a proper license), conspiracy to commit armed robbery, and resisting, evading or obstructing an officer.
This case remains under investigation and other people involved in the incident could potentially face criminal charges.
