The multi-agency investigation into the Jan. 6 officer-involved shooting involving the Roswell Police Department remains ongoing. However, the investigation has confirmed the following:

Two RPD officers responding to the domestic-disturbance call about 5:20 p.m. encountered Nickolas Acosta outside a residence in the 1200 block of South Michigan Avenue. Acosta produced a knife and began coming toward the officers. He ignored the officers’ repeated commands to drop the knife and to stop coming toward them. The two officers fired their guns at Acosta, striking him one or more times (the specific number will be determined as part of the investigation). Acosta was transported to a hospital where he later died. The officers were not injured.

The officers have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with RPD standard procedure during investigations of officer-involved shootings. Once completed, the investigation’s final report and findings will be sent to the district attorney’s office, which will make final decisions regarding the actions of the officers.

This officer-involved shooting is being investigated by a team made up of members of the Roswell Police Department, Chaves County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State Police.
