A carjacking occurred Monday (June 20) in the Allsup’s parking lot at South Sunset Avenue and West Poe Street around 4:20 p.m. A male approached a GMC Denali pickup truck, threatened the male driver by pointing a gun at him, forced the driver out of the pickup and stole the truck.
RPD and the Chaves County Sheriff’s Office began looking for the stolen pickup and it was spotted on Lea Avenue about 4:30 p.m. RPD and CCSO units began pursuing the pickup, which drove at high speeds through areas south of Second Street, moving to the east side of the city, and then headed north on Atkinson Avenue, eventually reaching Country Club Road, where it turned west, went to Main Street and turned south. It drove south on Main, at times driving south in the northbound lanes, before eventually going east on Second Street. It headed out of the city on U.S. 380 (Second Street), with New Mexico State Police also being involved in the pursuit. Law enforcement used spike strips to spike the truck’s tires around 5:35 p.m. as it approached Tatum. It reached Tatum, about 70 miles from Roswell, at around 5:40 p.m. Within minutes, the truck flipped onto its driver’s side in Tatum. The suspect male driving the stolen truck, along with a female also in the truck, were each taken into custody. The investigation continues.
Fortunately, the pursuit did not result in any other vehicles being struck and no injuries were reported.
