Barry STEAM Academy Principal Nicole Hahn and Assistant Principal Kelly Bradley were chosen to present at the National Science Teaching Association Conference in Anaheim, California, according to an April 24 announcement from Clovis Municipal Schools. Their selection followed a competitive national process that recognized their efforts in integrating science and literacy instruction.

The opportunity highlights the school’s innovative approach, which connects science concepts with reading, writing, and mathematics throughout the school day. This method aims to deepen student learning and engagement by weaving topics such as “The Changing Earth” into various subjects. “Their presentation showcases how they reimagined Barry’s daily schedule by integrating morphology, the science of reading, and hands-on STEM learning. By weaving complex concepts like ‘The Changing Earth’ into reading blocks, expository writing, and math measuring stations, they proved their core belief: EVERYTHING can be taught through science,” said Clovis Municipal Schools.

Since its opening, Barry STEAM Academy has worked on building a strong instructional model while facing challenges such as ongoing construction and varying staff experience levels. School leadership said these efforts have led to growth in student reading and math performance as well as improved attendance rates and fewer behavioral incidents over the past three years.

Hahn and Bradley will also present at the Southern Regional Education Board Conference in Nashville this July. The district said it is proud of their accomplishments being recognized both nationally and regionally.
